Press Release
“Bellie Nation” raises funds and creates a stunning scoreboard on the Queens Park East Field
August 1, 2014: August 4 - 9, New Westminster and Coquitlam will host the Peewee, Bantam and Midget Lacrosse Nationals and will use this prestigious national lacrosse event to have a symbolic 'unveiling' of the new scoreboard that some residents of New Westminster may have noticed while walking through Queens Park recently. This huge Scoreboard will go live after the final game at the Nationals on Saturday August 9th, 2014 and will count down the minutes until 9pm when the Nationals are officially over. Player trading will continue into the night under the scoreboard on the field.
Scoreboard timeline:
The scoreboard idea was brought forward by Past President of the Minor Salmonbellies, Jamie Stewart and past Vice President Warren Goss (both active with the Junior club now and still helping with minors)
Said Darren Flintoff, current President of the Minor Salmonbellies;
“New Westminster Parks and Rec informed me that the B.C. Lions scoreboard was available and that it had been used for one season at their temporary Field when BC Place was being renovated. Our parent company, Stonewater Group, purchased the scoreboard and approached our sign company (Image Sign and Lighting Ltd.) to create a billboard that would inspire future generations to carry forward the Pride and Tradition of the Salmonbellies. The sign company owner played minor lacrosse and knew all about the Salmonbellies so the project excited him, and the City was very supportive of the initiative all the way through the process.”
This year marks the 125th Anniversary of the Salmonbellies Club and having just recently entered into a formal Licensing Agreement with both the Junior and Senior clubs, the project was then mentioned to Walt Weaver - President of the Junior Salmonbellies and Dan Richardson - President of the Sr. Salmonbellies to see what 'Bellie nation' could do to help make this addition to the Queen's Park East Field a reality.
After a few months, each club through their Alumni and sponsors had managed to raise 1/3 of the cost for the scoreboard. The remaining 1/3 was looked after by Stonewater with some extra generosity from the sign company.
The scoreboard design depicts the historic green wood floor of Queens Park Arena, and its retro design adds to its nostalgic appeal. Feedback since its installation has been extremely positive.
Darren Flintoff would like to say a big thank you to his and his wife’s friends and business partners Bill and Kelly Ranford, along with the Senior and Junior Salmonbellies for making this vision a reality, and the Minor Salmonbellies would like to thank Stonewater for their generousity in making this iconic scoreboard a reality for future residents and lacrosse players to enjoy.
